The Kentucky House of Representatives sent a message to the Kentucky Senate, January 15, 1872, that they had passed a bill to authorize trustees to acquire a right-of-way and extend a railroad line through certain counties. The Senate followed by passing this bill chartering the Cincinnati Southern Railroad, which, when completed in 1880, provided a line from Cincinnati through central and eastern Kentucky to the South, rivaling the politically powerful L & N Railroad. Twice before, the General Assembly had defeated such a charter.
