On February 20, 1874, the Kentucky General Assembly approved a resolution to purchase busts of Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson, sculpted by Joel T. Hart, for the sum of $1,700. Hart (1810-77), a native of Kentucky who studied in Italy, reportedly thought more of himself as a poet than as a sculptor; however, he is remembered today for the sculptures he produced rather than his writing.
