The Kentucky General Assembly passed an act, approved on March 16, 1906, appropriating $5,000 to the Kentucky Historical Society “for postage and stationery supplies . . . and providing for the publication of The Register magazine of the society, the purchase of objects of historical interest, and the payment of a secretary-treasurer.” This action was justified as an attempt to place Kentucky “in line with the leading States in the Union, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Mississippi and Alabama, that have appropriated to their Historical Societies from one hundred thousand dollars to ten thousand dollars, annually.”
