Divorce

An act approved on February 10, 1820, repealed a portion of an 1809 act entitled “an act regulating divorces in this commonwealth.” As a result, "the injured party" no longer had to wait two years before remarrying.

Striped silk wedding dress, 1839. Document from a divorce case, Greenup County, 1823.

The striped silk wedding dress was worn by Amanda Hamilton in her marriage to George T. Roberts in Gallatin County, May 16, 1839. Donated by Margaret Roberts Sands. The document is from a divorce case heard before the Greenup County Circuit Court in 1823. Rebecca Beeman of Washington was ordered to appear before the court in the case of Beeman vs. Beeman. Her husband, Reuben, charged her with adultery and desertion. The court also ordered that a copy of the summons be published in a newspaper for two months. Her failure to appear before the court during that period constituted an admission of guilt. KHS Collections.
