Old State Capitol Executive Wing

Resolution No. 15 was passed and approved March 3, 1873. It ordered the appointment of a committee of the House and Senate “to inquire and report what additional work and appropriations are necessary to finish the new wing to the Capitol known as 'Fire-proof Offices.”

The 1873 capital wing, known today as the Old State Capitol Annex.

The 1873 capitol wing, known today as the Old State Capitol Annex, suffered severe damage from fire despite its “fire-proof” construction. The Kentucky Geological Survey, located on the first floor, sustained considerable water damage. W.R. Jillson noted in his 1930 report of Geological Survey Affairs, “With the heating, lighting and water system of the building demolished, the erstwhile elegant offices of the Survey presented an appearance of abject desolation, which, coupled with a very low temperature, made the work of salvaging and cleaning up difficult and costly.”
