Primary Elections

The primary system for nominating political candidates was a key tenet of the Progressive reform movement. An act, approved March 5, 1912, provided that “all candidates for elective offices to be voted for at any general election shall be nominated" by "a primary election held in accordance with the provisions of this act.” The primary election was to be conducted on the first Saturday in August of each year between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
