19. University of Louisville (1846)

In "an act to establish the University of Louisville," the General Assembly on February 7, 1846, enacted "that an institution of learning shall be and the same is hereby established and incorporated in the city of Louisville." Eleven men, including Henry Pirtle, James Guthrie, and William F. Bullock, were appointed trustees. They and their successors "shall be a body politic and corporate, in law, under the name and style of the President and Trustees of the University of Louisville." The president of the university was to be appointed from the trustees.
