SB 154 (BR 1345) - L. Casebier
AN ACT relating to the elementary school curriculum.
Create a new section of KRS Chapter 158 to establish the General Assembly's finding that integration of the arts and foreign languages into the school curriculum benefits students by increasing their motivation to learn, improves attendance, fosters multicultural understanding, and develops neurological cognitive potential through higher order thinking skills, creativity, and problem solving; create a new section of KRS Chapter 158 to require the Department of Education to establish a program that promotes the integration of the arts and foreign languages into the elementary school program by awarding a grant to at least 1 school per region under specified criteria; and require the Department of Education to report annually by July 1 of each year on the implementation of the program to the Governor and the Legislative Research Commission.
SB 154 - AMENDMENTS
SFA (1, J. Westwood) - Create a new section of KRS Chapter 158 to require the Kentucky Board of Education to promulgate an administrative regulation relating to instruction and testing in American history that includes the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and flag etiquette.
HFA (1, T. Pullin) - Amend KRS 158.070 to provide that when a local school district or school lengthens its school days for students to make up instructional time missed because of weather, illness, or other emergency, the time for certified staff shall be calculated as equivalent time to be applied toward the 175 required instructional days but shall not affect a person's service credit for retirement purposes; if the district uses the flexibility provided under this provision for noncertified personnel, the calculation shall not affect the noncertified person's retirement; amend KRS 158.649 to conform; EMERGENCY.
