HB 525 (BR 1870) - S. Nunn, T. Burch

     AN ACT relating to cancer research.
     Create a new section of KRS Chapter 164 to require the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky to jointly establish and maintain a cancer tissue registry for cancer tissue donation for research purposes; provide that public or private funds may used for costs; require a gatekeeper to be responsible for operations of the registry and permit a contractor to perform gatekeeper tasks; require ongoing collaboration with specified agencies and entities to establish strategies for donor designation; require report to the Governor and Legislative Research Commission by August 1, 2007 and annually thereafter; specify that cancer research associated with the registry shall not include stem cell research.

     HCS - Revise to require a joint task force by the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville to develop strategies to establish a cancer tissue research registry; specify membership; specify duties to include recommendations on operating the registry, designation of donor status, public awareness efforts, and initial and ongoing funding; require report to Interim Joint Committee on Health & Welfare by February 1, 2007.
