SB 115 (BR 1267) - J. Westwood
AN ACT relating to government and civics education.
Create a new section of KRS Chapter 158 to require the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to establish a high school government and civics education pilot program and study; require KDE to collaborate with the Kentucky Workgroup on Civic Literacy and Engagement; specify components of the course curriculum to be used in the program; require the course to be available through the Kentucky Virtual High School; require KDE to select 10 high schools to participate in a three-year pilot program; require professional development for pilot program participants; require the Kentucky Board of Education to select a university to develop the course curriculum, develop and implement professional development opportunities, and conduct a research evaluation of the pilot program; require annual reports to the Kentucky Board of Education and the Interim Joint Committee on Education; and amend KRS 156.553 to require KDE to allocate funds from the teachers' professional growth fund to support the pilot program and study for the fiscal years 2006-2007 through 2009-2010 in an amount not to exceed $75,000 annually.
SB 115 - AMENDMENTS
SCS - Retain original provisions of SB 115, except remove the requirement for the Kentucky Department of Education to allocate funds from the teachers' professional growth fund to support the pilot program and study.
SCA (1/Title, J. Westwood) - Make title amendment.
HCS - Delete the requirement that the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) use a request for proposal process to select a university to develop the government and civics education course curriculum; require KDE to develop the curriculum, in collaboration with the public universities involved with the Kentucky Workgroup on Civic Literacy.
