Summary of Enacted Version Amends KRS 156.160 to require that cursive writing be included as a course of study in all elementary schools beginning in the 2025-2026 school year; and amends KRS 158.6453 to distinguish basic handwriting or penmanship from the definition of “writing."

Summary of Original Version Amend KRS 156.160 to require cursive writing to be included as a course of study in all elementary schools beginning in the 2025-2026 school year; create new sections of KRS Chapter 158 to establish a public high school graduation requirement that a student demonstrate the ability to sign his or her own name in cursive; direct the Kentucky Board of Education to promulgate administrative regulations to administer the section and create a waiver process for students physically unable to demonstrate a cursive signature; require all public high schools to offer a course in typing and cursive writing; direct Kentucky Board of Education to promulgate administrative regulations to establish academic standards for the course; require successful completion of the course to be a graduation requirement from the 2025-2026 school year through the 2028-2029 school year.
